Commitment to Peace August 6, 1995 Children's representatives Miyuki Kubo (6th Grade, Hiroshima City Shiya Elementary School) and Kenji Yamaguchi (6th Grade, Hiroshima City Kusatsu Elementary School) In this important year, the 50th year since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, we have come from cities throughout the world to participate in the Children's Peace Assembly. We have discovered much in this atomic-bombed city of Hiroshima. On the day of the atomic bombing, people died in an instant, they died while seeking help, while suffering in agony, When thinking of the scene and of the horror and cruelty of nuclear weapons and war, we have come to feel ever more strongly that the tragedy of Hiroshima must never be repeated. Now, war and poverty harm and kill many people in various places on this Earth. In addition, our global environment is gradually being destroyed. While participating in this event, we reflected on what we can and must do so that all the world's people can live safe and peaceful lives. We learned that compassion and kindness toward our friends is of the utmost importance in achieving peace, as well as cooperation in friendship with all the people of the world. We therefore realized the importance of understanding and respecting each other's views, rising above differences in languages and ideas. The universe is unlimited. Our beautiful, blue and shining Earth exists in that space. For the future of our precious Earth, we vow to share what we have learned in Hiroshima and to strive toward renewed world peace together with the wonderful friends we made here at the Children's Peace Assembly.
